Banff by minibus: lakes, parkways and the park rules
Banff National Park rewards a small group that plans ahead. Lakes, canyons and parkways are all within an hour or two, but parking is tight and the rules are strict, so a minibus with a licensed operator does a lot of the work for you.
From Calgary airport
Banff's airport is Calgary International, 145 km or so away and about 90 minutes along the Trans-Canada. At YYC, authorized commercial vehicles load at bus bays opposite the terminal on the Arrivals level, handed out in order of flight arrival, so send us your flight times and the operator plans around them.

Park passes for a group
Any stop inside the park needs a Parks Canada pass, whether it's town, a viewpoint or a picnic table; the one exception is driving non-stop through the park on the Trans-Canada. A commercial group doesn't buy ordinary passes: its admission is set up with Parks Canada's Western Group and Commercial Tours Office, and a family pass won't do. Ask the operator how it's handled on your booking.
The two famous lakes
Private cars never get up Moraine Lake Road. In 2026 the road was open from June 1 to mid-October only to the Parks Canada shuttle, Roam's public buses and licensed commercial vehicles with at least 11 people aboard, and the operator needs both a park business licence and a road licence applied for early in the year. That suits a minibus well, but ask early.
Lake Louise gives commercial vehicles ten minutes to set down or collect at the lakeshore. Its commercial bus lot shuts overnight in summer, and once it's full a vehicle may unload but can't stay.

Stopping in town
Coaches can't park on Banff streets outside the 15-minute bus zones by most hotels, and idling isn't allowed; longer waits happen at 300 Hawk Avenue. A 2026 pilot also let shuttles of 11 to 24 seats load for 15 minutes in the Town-owned lot just east of the Mount Royal Hotel, so ask whether it's still running. The Banff Gondola takes group bookings 48 hours ahead and has little parking, and the Upper Hot Springs reopened in early 2026.
Your questions
Can we drive the Bow Valley Parkway to Johnston Canyon?
Usually, about 30 minutes out. Under a cycling pilot running from 2025 to 2029, the 17 km at the eastern end, from the Trans-Canada junction to Johnston Canyon, is closed to motor vehicles during set spring and early-autumn weeks, but the canyon stays reachable via Castle Junction.
What should we know about the Icefields Parkway in winter?
The Columbia Icefield is about two and a half hours away. Snow tires or chains are the rule there between November 1 and March 31, and at any other time the road is snow- or ice-covered. Yoho and Kootenay follow BC's rules from October 1.
What else is within an hour?
Canmore is about 20 minutes and Emerald Lake in Yoho about an hour.
