Off to the Slopes, Skis and All

A ski day starts early and ends tired. Handing the mountain road to someone else means the whole group can doze on the way home, and nobody spends the week before watching the forecast.

How far is the hill?

From Vancouver, Whistler is about 120 km up the Sea-to-Sky Highway, around two hours. Calgary groups reach Banff in about an hour and a half and Lake Louise in about two, and from Banff itself Lake Louise is roughly 45 minutes. Montreal to Mont-Tremblant takes about 1.5 hours and Ottawa to Mont-Tremblant about two, Mont-Sainte-Anne sits about 40 minutes from Quebec City, and Blue Mountain near Collingwood is about two hours from Toronto.

Those are clear-road times. Add a margin for snow, and another for the queue at the rental counter.

Tires, chains and dates

On BC's Sea-to-Sky Highway, the winter tire or chain season runs 1 October through 31 March; most other signed BC routes carry it to 30 April. Commercial drivers leaving Greater Vancouver or Greater Victoria must also have chains or traction devices aboard through the winter. The operator confirms the vehicle is equipped for your route.

Québec's winter-tire season is 1 December through 15 March. It covers Québec-registered vehicles, minibuses included, while heavy vehicles and anything registered outside the province are exempt.

Rules worth knowing

  • Commercial drivers in BC travelling outside Greater Vancouver and Greater Victoria in winter must carry chains or traction devices
  • Québec requires winter tires from December 1 to March 15; heavy vehicles and vehicles registered outside Québec are exempt

Skiing inside Banff National Park

Any stop inside Banff National Park requires a Parks Canada pass. Commercial vehicles for 11 or more people also need a park business licence, with a commercial park pass displayed, and groups are charged commercial group admission; family and group passes don't count. When your quote arrives, check how park entry is being handled.

Your questions

Where do the skis and boards go?

That depends on the vehicle. A full minibus has limited space at the back, so tell us how many skis, boards and boot bags are coming. For a bigger group, a coach with underfloor bays carries gear more easily.

Can the driver wait for us all day?

Yes. Book the vehicle for the whole day with a set pickup time at the end, and agree one meeting point in case the group splits up on the hill.

What if the highway closes?

The operator may delay or reroute the trip for safety. How changes are handled is set out in the terms on your quote.
